Academy to Honor Legendary Martinique Film Director

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - June 30, 2022

The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is honoring legendary film director Euzhan Palcy, a native of Martinique.

At this November’s Governor’s Awards, the filmmaker will receive an honorary award, along with Michael J. Fox and Australian director Peter Weir.

Palcy is most famous for her Martinique-set film Sugar Cane Alley, arguably the most celebrated film about the Caribbean.

That film won Palcy a Cesar for Best Feature Film, for which she was the first Black director to receive the award.

Her career includes films such as A Dry White Season starring Marlon Brando; Ruby Bridges; Simeon; and The Killing Yard, among others.

“Once again, Euzhan Palcy puts the spotlight on her native Martinique, with her dedication, hard work and internationally recognized accomplishments,” said Bénédicte di Geronimo, Martinique Tourism Commissioner. “We are so proud of having such a strong female figure who has tremendously impacted cinema and continues to inspire generations to come, in this industry and beyond.”
