Aruba, Cancun Top Most Popular Destinations in Allianz Survey

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - May 3, 2019

Cancun and Aruba are the two most popular international destinations for summer travel this year, according to a new report from Allianz Global Assistance.

Cancun is in the top spot for American travelers for the third year in a row, followed by Aruba at number two.

The list analyzed Allianz’s customers’ summer trips planned from May 24 through Sept. 3, 2019.

The result? All of the top 10 destinations were in Mexico and the Caribbean, including San Jose del Cabo; Nassau; Higuey in the Dominican Republic; Montego Bay, Jamaica; Providenciales, Turks and Caicos; San Juan, Puerto Rico (which is geographically in the Caribbean but of course part of the United States); Puerto Vallarta and Grand Cayman.

Of those, Aruba saw the largest year over year increase, with a 6.6 percent jump in demand.

“Americans are staying closer to home this summer, with all top ten international destinations in the Caribbean and Mexico for the first time,” said Daniel Durazo, director of communications at Allianz Global Assistance USA. “Summer means shoulder season in much of the Caribbean and Mexico, so deals and discounts make it a great time to visit our tropical neighbors. With hurricane season beginning in June, it’s especially important to consider travel insurance for your summer vacations. Remember that once a storm or hurricane has been named, it’s too late to get hurricane coverage, so it’s important to buy travel insurance when booking your trip.”
