A 7.5-magnitude earthquake shook Mexico City on Friday morning, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The major quake struck at around 7:27 AM local time, at a depth of 48 kilometres.
The quake’s epicentre was about 37 kilometres north of Tecpan de Galeana and about 265 kilometres southwest of Mexico City.
The strongest reports of shaking came in the areas surrounding the capital, with strong shaking in Mexico City and light shaking across the centre of the country.
Mexico’s Civil Protection office did not yet have any specific information on the extent of any damage or injuries.
The USGS issued a “yellow” alert, signaling the possibility of some casualties and damage, although the impact should be “relatively localized.”
