Fire destroys Haitian Village in the Bahamas

The question of increased Haitian immigration is nothing new to the Bahamas — but new problems are beginning to emerge in the so-called “Haitian villages” set up by immigrants. A fire broke out in a shantytown off Fire Trail Road in New Providence, leaving hundreds homeless. Supreintendent Jeffrey Delevaux, director of fire services, said the close proximity of shacks made the fire very difficult to manage. The possibility of arson was not ruled out, however. “It’s a possibility that arson is involved,” Delevaux said. “It’s a possibility that it’s an electrical fire. It’s a possibility that someone was cooking and [left] something unattended.” Five units responded to the fire, including the Royal Bahamas Defence Force’s marines and the airport unit.
