Grenada’s government has launched a plan aimed at reducing poverty on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique.

The programme, dubbed the Grenada Market Access and Rural Enterprise Development Programme, seeks to reduce rural poverty and the vulnerability of rural youth and self-employed men and women in the country.

According to Learrie Barry, the programme’s manager, the six-year project will focus on strengthening rural organizations, producer groups and youth groups, among others, by increasing organizational development and improving access to markets and market opportunities.

George Prime, Grenada’s Minister for Carriacou and Petite Martinique Affairs said it was an opportunity for the two islands to access funds and training that will aid in the sustainability of their economies.

Financing for the loan supporting the project is coming from the International Fund for Agriculture and the Caribbean Development Bank.
