This Top Caribbean Regatta Is Back

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - August 4, 2023

The longest running workboat regatta in the Caribbean is back again this year on the Grenadian island of Carriacou.

This year’s Carriacou Regatta Festival, which first launched in 1965, puts the focus on the island’s long history of boat building.

The festival, which kicked off Aug. 4, has races for multiple classes of workboats, including the popular deck sloop around-the-island race.

That’s along with onshore activities like donkey racing, “walking the greasy pole” and evening food and music.

“Carriacou is our “cradle of culture” and renowned globally for its boat-building traditions. The festival highlights the skillfully crafted Carriacou and Petite Martinique sloops and schooners and features competitive sailing against the backdrop of the beautiful Grenadine islands,” says Petra Roach, CEO of Grenada Tourism Authority. “If you have never witnessed a Carriacou Regatta, it is truly an experience not to be missed.”
