Tiny Hotel of the Week: Sweetfield Manor, the Charming Hilltop Retreat That Just Might Be the Best-Kept Secret in Barbados

The lovely, warm Sweetfield Manor is a very different side of Barbados.

If you haven’t noticed, here at Caribbean Journal we adore small hotels. There’s just something charming, something captivating about boutique properties. They’re a kind of art form: the pure manifestation of the vision of their individual hoteliers, an extension of them and their personalities.

And you know what we love even more than small hotels? Tiny hotels — pint-sized properties with 10 rooms or less than make you fall in love from the moment you arrive.

Our new “Tiny Hotel of the Week” feature will shine the spotlight on some of our favorite extra-small hotels in the Caribbean, taking you on a journey and hopefully inspiring your next getaway.

The pool is particularly appealing.

We start this week with Sweetfield Manor, one of the best-kept secrets in Barbados.

The historic property sits on a ridge high above Bridgetown, offering up some of the island’s best views.

What do we like? The grotto-style lagoon pool is just a lovely place to cool off from the sun, and the rooms are charming and well-appointed, each with modern amdenites like flat-screens and fridges.

The story here is the feel: it’s serene, quiet and rarefied, with a lovely little spa and a great restaurant (including a popular Sunday brunch) called Pavâo, which is the Portuguese word for peacock, a creature which is prolific at the hotel property. The food is excellent, with a diverse that includes some great beer-battered fish and some vegetarian options, too. We particularly loved the open-air bar on our last visit.

There’s even regular yoga on offer.
