Jamaica is considering a massive redevelopment of the town of Ocho Rios, according to Prime Minister Andrew Holness.

The idea is to make a “huge investment,” in the area, which is one of the island’s most popular tourism destinations.

“The entire town of Ocho Rios is being looked at for redevelopment,” Holness said this week during a visit to the area’s central market.

The idea is to begin with upgrading the town’s market and transportation center.

The plans come as Ocho Rios’ nearby Ian Fleming Airport just welcomed its first-ever scheduled international flights on American Airlines. That route has already proven popular and will be expanding to daily service later this year.

So what kind of investment is the government considering? “It’s in the billions of dollars,” Holness said.
