A New Tennis Tournament Is Coming to the British Virgin Islands in May

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - March 28, 2024

A new invitational tennis tournament is coming to Virgin Gorda in the British Virgin Islands, Caribbean Journal has learned.

The island will play host to the the first-ever BVI Cup Presented by Rosewood Little Dix Bay in May.

The event, which will include tennis stars like Monica Puig, Marcos Baghdatis, Christina McHale, and Darian King, will run from May 17-21, with VIP packages available for guests.

It’s being developed by the team that produced the Hawaii Open and the Waikiki Cup, timed for the 60th anniversary celebration of the resort founded by Laurance Rockefeller back in 1964.

“Sixty years is an incredible milestone that we wanted to celebrate with a world-class event that represented the current interests of our guests,” said Andreas Pade, Managing Director of Rosewood Little Dix Bay. “Our tennis courts have become a beloved part of the resort experience and provide the perfect backdrop for a rousing match in a truly unique setting. We look forward to welcoming tennis enthusiasts from around the world to experience this special affair and hope to do so for years to come.”

The biggest name is certainly Puig, who won a gold medal at the Rio 2016 Olympics and starred for years on the WTA Tour.

“We are so excited to bring world-class tennis for the community and visitors alike to this beautiful locale,” said Ben Goldsmith and Kyla Goldsmith, event producers. “Rosewood Little Dix Bay in the British Virgin Islands is already a dream destination, and now, we hope the added bonus of a premier tennis event will be an added reason to come and experience the beauty and incredible hospitality of this country.”

Most notably, the resort has partnered with luxury airline Tradewind Aviation, which has added flights to Virgin Gorda on May 17 and for departures on May 24.

Tradewind is the premier way to travel to Virgin Gorda, flying out of San Juan.

The BVI is no stranger to exclusive tennis tournaments, with Sir Richard Branson regularly hosting the famous Necker Cup tournament on his private island in the BVI.
