Montego’s Bay Airport Has a New Look

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - September 26, 2023

Jamaica’s biggest air hub has unveiled a major new look, following a large-scale expansion and upgrade project at the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay.

The airport has revealed an expanded immigration hall and departure lounge, upgraded retail space and, perhaps most notably, the first-ever Bob Marley restaurant.

That comes along with upgraded infrastructure at the airport, including a runway extension, a widened taxiway and the ability to accommodate larger aircraft including the Airbus A380.

“As Jamaica’s most highly trafficked airport and the first and last thing a stopover visitor experiences of our island, it is critical that the Montego Bay facility provides a smooth, seamless and enjoyable ambiance,” said Jamaica Tourism Minister Edmund Bartlett. “The addition of the Bob Marley restaurant is particularly welcomed, allowing us to share Jamaica’s unique musical and culinary heritage with travelers from around the world in tribute to the great reggae artist’s legacy.”

The most notable addition is the Bob Marley-branded eatery, the first of its kind, dubbed Bob Marley (One Love).

The eatery features authentic Jamaican cuisine and “the spirit of reggae,” according to airport officials.

“As the centerpiece of the augmentations at Sangster International Airport, the new restaurant not only pays homage to iconic Jamaican musician, Bob Marley, but helps us shine a spotlight on Jamaican culture as a whole,” said Donovan White, Director of Tourism at the Jamaica Tourist Board. “Its in-terminal location ensures that visitors can experience the magic of Jamaican irie vibes and cuisine from the moment they step on or off the plane, so they’re more immersed throughout their time on island.”

Montego Bay’s airport debuted a $70 million renewal extension that opened in August.

It’s another boost for an island that has been seeing record-breaking tourism arrivals so far in 2023, and one that is primed for a big fall season, too.
