Belmond is reopening its top resort in Mexico next spring, Caribbean Journal has learned.
The rebranded Belmond, a Maroma Hotel is set to reopen its doors on May 23, 2023, the property confirmed this week.
The long-awaited return of the property follows an “extensive transformation” of the property under the brand’s new owner, LVMH.
That includes the addition of 10 new waterfront suites, along with a new wellness experience in partnership with Guerlain and a new gastronomic program led by Mexican Chef Daniel Camacho.
“Maroma offered a rare opportunity to reimagine this iconic hotel, with its rich and storied history. We sought to retain and enhance the original character, working with local artisans, whilst simultaneously incorporating a contemporary elegance, a warmth that also has a sense of home, that speaks to the needs of the Belmond guest for generations to come,” said Tara Bernerd, who led the “comprehensive restoration” of the property. “Maroma will showcase an extraordinary collection of pan-Mexican art and design. Eighty percent of furnishings and objects will be made by Mexican craftspeople, from a hand-blown glass chandelier and painted clay pots to traditional ‘Saltillo’ floor tiles, meticulously curated for guest rooms.”
Camacho, known for his celebrated Casa Mayor restaurant, is working on a focused sustainability approach, with what the hotel says will be 90 percent of all ingredients sourced from Mexico, and almost half from the Yucatan Peninsula.
Belmond says it’s the first major transformation of one of its North American properties since the LVMH acquisition.
Belmond has two other branded resorts in the Caribbean: the Belmond La Samanna in St Martin and the Belmond Cap Juluca in Anguilla.
