The spectacular beaches of the Caribbean remain the region’s ultimate siren song for travelers. They’re the reason we sit at our desks, dreaming of the islands, placing ourselves there, even just for a moment.
They’re the essence of what makes the Caribbean the world’s most romantic destination.
And while the Caribbean’s exotic white sands are unmatched around the world, if you dig deep enough you can find something rather special: pink sand.
Dotted around the Caribbean are some truly delightful little stretches of pink sand, which are typically the result of miniscule pink-and-red shells that once housed tiny organisms called foraminifera.
So where can you find these wonders? Take a journey with us around some of our favorite pink sand beaches in the Caribbean, from The Bahamas to Grenada.
Pink Sand Beach, Harbour Island The ultimate pink sand beach in the Caribbean, this three-mile-long stunner is a radiant shade of pink, endlessly wide, rimmed with some of the most beautiful boutique hotels in The Bahamas.
Low Bay, Barbuda Barbuda is home to miles and miles of shimmering beaches where you can spend all day and often never see another soul. One of its signature strands is Low Bay, the miles-long pink sand stretch on the far western coast of Barbuda.
Greenwood Beach, Cat Island, The Bahamas One of the best-kept secrets in The Bahamas, this pink sand marvel is set on the southeastern coast of Cat Island, home, too to the colorful little Greenwood Beach Resort. (It’s also a top beach for kitesurfing).
French Leave, Eleuthera If you haven’t been to Eleuthera, you’re missing out on one of the most intoxicating and beautiful places in The Bahamas. And if you make the trip, you can’t miss the charming town of Governor’s Harbour, the site of French Leave Beach, a mile-long pink-sand shoreline that’s also home to the lovely 20-room French Leave Resort.
Shell Beach, St Barth One of St Barth’s most chic destinations, this beach is comprised of thousands of tiny shells that give it its uncanny pinkish color. Even better? It’s home to the Shellona beach bar and restaurant, a place for all-day food-and-drink parties right on the water.
Crane Beach, Barbados Home The Crane, the historic resort that first opened its doors in Barbados in 1887 and remains one of the island’s most iconic places to stay, this beach is set on Barbados’ rugged, gorgeous southeastern Atlantic coast.
Baie Rouge, St Martin It’s perhaps best known as the home of La Samanna, the leading luxury hotel on the island, but its sleek pink-edged sand is just as much of a draw. The stunning sweep of coastline is rimmed by intimidating, beautiful cliffs, making for some awe-inspiring vistas.
Pink Gin Beach, Grenada The sand is pink and the water is gin-clear, making this one of greatest beach spots in all of Grenada. It’s also home to Sandals’ most famous resort, the celebrated Sandals Grenada.
Pink Beach, Bonaire It’s amazing how much Bonaire changes as you make your way from the north to south of the island, a dynamic landscape from craggy cliffs to desert wilderness to fields of cacti. And the south is particularly special, marked by dramatic salt flats. But there are beaches, too, including the island’s only pink sand beach.
Point of Sand, Little Cayman The smallest of the Cayman Islands immediately wins you over with its castaway-cool personality, world-class diving and its surfeit of empty beaches. That includes the island’s most popular amenity, Point of Sand, an oasis of calm, quiet and perfect snorkeling, too.
