The Caribbean’s Newest Kitesurfing Destination

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - January 25, 2016

The Caribbean has a new destination for kitesurfing: Little Cayman.

The island’s Southern Cross Club has acquired Lost Boys Kitesurfing, a kitesurfing operation on Little Cayman, and has now launched a kitesurfing program at the property.

“All the teaching is done in the lagoon in front of the resort where the water is shallow and calm with a sandy bottom,” says Mark DeBeer, kitesurfing instructor at the resort. “We always have a ‘clean wind’ which means its coming in fresh from the sea – no rambling over mountains, trees or land. This makes it very steady – really good conditions for beginners.”

DeBeer, who is the only kitesurfing instructor on the tiny island in the Cayman Islands, says he’s excited about teaching visitors and locals about the sport.

“At the Southern Cross Club we pride ourselves on being a conservative-minded resort, and adding kitesurfing, an eco-friendly sport, is another way our guests can enjoy the natural beauty of Little Cayman,” said Southern Cross Club General Manager Jennifer Mills.

The resort’s beginner’s course takes students through the basics, and novice kitesurfers can then do supervised sessions, the Trick Academy or Pontoon/Boat Days.

The boutique property consists of 14 beachfront bungalows.
