Haiti held its first round of presidential elections on Sunday, although it will likely be some time before the leading vote-getters are announced.
The country also held the second round of legislative elections and municipal elections; both the legislative and municipal votes had been delayed for more than four years.
In a statement, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon reiterated his call “to all Haitians to exercise their democratic right to vote.”
There are 54 candidates vying to become the country’s next president.
The elections are being overseen by a number of international groups including CARICOM and the Organization of American States.
