Dominica has officially renamed its main airport.

The former Melville Hall International Airport has been renamed the Douglas-Charles Airport.

It honour former Prime Ministers Roosevelt Douglas and Pierre Charles for their “heroic contributions to Dominica’s development.”

Charles served as Prime Minister from 2000 to 2004, while Douglas served as Prime Minister for eight months in 2000.

The new Douglas-Charles airport is the island’s main airport, and dates back to 1944.

It had been named for Sir Robert Melville, a former British Governor.

The name change was made official at a ceremony this week overseen by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.
