Should St Maarten deepen its economic engagement with the rest of the Caribbean?

That was among the findings of a closed-door session this week between the Second Chamber Committee of Kingdom Relations and 10 Caribbean and Latin American Ambassadors.

“Sint Maarten needs to strengthen its economic ties within the region and find ways to take advantage of the economic growth in Latin American and Central American markets, where it is sometimes cheaper to import products from,” the government said in a statement following the talks.
The group also discussed visas for investors, which was first brought up at a meeting in Curacao.

It will hold a similar conference next year that will address issues like economic possibilities, energy and children’s rights, the government said.

The group included envoys and Ministers from Cuba, Colombia, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Curacao, Aruba, Peru, Trinidad, Argentina and Costa Rica.
