Nine Fun Things to Do in Nevis

Nevis: one of the smallest, most charming islands in the Caribbean. For many, it’s the Caribbean as it once was (there isn’t even a single traffic light). But whether you’re looking for a relaxing getaway or a natural adventure, Nevis has you covered. Here are nine great experiences to try on the island.

Visit the Caribbean’s first hotel (and bathe in a hot spring)

The 18th-century Bath Hotel was the first hotel in the Caribbean; it was so named because of a group of thermal springs. While the main springs are closed, you can still bathe in a thermal spring just outside the hotel site, which today is used as the Premier’s office.

Have dinner in a mill

A number of old sugar mills dot the landscape in Nevis, once the sugar production hub of the region. And the one at the Montpelier Plantation & Beach, Mill Privee, offers a unique dining experience.

Visit Alexander Hamilton’s birthplace

American Founding Father Alexander Hamilton was actually born on the island, and the Hamilton Estate, where Hamilton lived as a child, is still a hub of politics, used today for sittings of the Nevis Island Assembly. It’s also the home of the Nevis Historical and Conservation Trust.

Hike Nevis Peak

Nevis is home to a long-dormant volcano (you’ll see it on the way in) which has become popular with hikers – and the rainforest is worth the trip alone.

Monkey around the golf course

Playing the Robert Trent Jones II-designed golf course at the Four Seasons Resort is itself a delight — but you’ll often be joined by a gallery of green vervet monkeys. Caution: they seldom recommend the right club for your shot.

Save some turtles

Fore more than 10 years, Nevis’ Lemmy Pemberton has been working to save the nesting sea turtle population on Nevis. Thanks in part to the Sea Turtle Conservancy and the Four Seasons, his efforts have begun to pay off. And every week, you can join Lemmy and his band of turtle-conservationists for a nighttime “turtle walk” on the beach. You may just meet a nesting leatherback.

Visit the Botanical Garden

Nevis is pretty relaxing, but the Botanical Garden takes it to another level. The perfect place for a leisurely afternoon stroll.

When beach bars compete, you win

What’s the best rum drink in Nevis? Is it the Killer Bee at Sunshine’s? Is it the Green Flash at Lime? They’re all within a few metres of each other, and you can try them all and decide for yourself.

To market, to market

The Charlestown market is always lively (by Nevisian standards) and is a great place to buy fresh, locally-grown produce.
