It’s Thanksgiving — time for egg nog, right? Well, not quite. There’s nothing like a classic egg nog with rum, but we thought we’d offer a list of 10 great alternative holiday cocktails using the finest rums from the Caribbean and the world. If you’re celebrating Thanksgiving tomorrow, have a wonderful holiday. If you’re not, well, Thursday’s as good a day as any to try any of these drinks. — CJ
Burnt Orange Hot Chocolate – Gosling’s Rum, Bermuda
1/2 oz Gosling’s Black Seal Rum
1/2 oz Orange Liqueur
Hot Chocolate, top with whipped cream
Also recommended: a blanket and a couch (unless you’re in the Caribbean).
Rum Milk Punch — Rhum Barbancourt, Haiti
5 cl of white Barbancourt rhum
2 cl of sugarcane syrup
12 cl of milk
Put all the ingredient in an electric blender. Mix for a few seconds, and serve in a pre-chilled glass. Sprinkle with grated nutmeg.
Hot Buttered Cider – Appleton Rum, Jamaica
1.5 oz Appleton Estate Reserve
2-3 oz Unfiltered apple cider
1 barspoon of spiced butter*
Garnish: Grated Nutmeg
Glass: Footed Tempered Glass/Mug
Preparation:
Steam until butter dissolves, and serve.
Spiced butter: 4oz butter, 3oz orgeat, 3oz maple syrup, 1 tsp pumpkin spices, pinch nutmeg, pinch cloves, pinch cinnamon. Heat in a pot to combine then chill in refrigerator
Bacardi Coquito — Bacardi, Puerto Rico
1 part (750ml bottle) BACARDÍ Superior Rum 1 part coconut milk 1 part can cream of coconut 2 parts condensed milk 4 part cans evaporated milk 1/4 sugar 1/8 part cinnamon 1/16 part vanilla extract
Blend all ingredients and pour into a 750 mL BACARDÍ Superior Rum bottle. *Makes 4-5 750 mL bottles for gift giving.
Thomas Tew Toddy — Newport, Rhode Island, USA
You can’t really have a list of Thanksgiving recipes without a rum from New England. Here’s the recipe for a Thomas Tew Toddy from the Newport Distilling Company in Rhode Island.
1 oz Thomas Tew Rum
1 oz Orgeat (almond syrup)
4 oz hot water
Atlantico Caribbean Flip — Ron Atlantico, Dominican Republic
1.75 oz ATLANTICO Reserva Rum
.75 oz Butterscotch Schnaps
.75 oz Dark Crème de Coco
.25 oz Honey
1 Egg
Add ingredients in Boston glass. Dry Shake, add ice and shake vigorously. Strain into cocktail glass. Garnish with nutmeg.
Extra Old Fashioned — Mount Gay Rum, Barbados
1.5 oz of Mount Gay Extra Old
2 dashes of Angostura Bitters
Teaspoon of Sugar
Orange Peel
Orange Slice
Maraschino Cherry
In a mixing glass, lightly muddle the orange peel with the rum and the sugar. Remove peel. Add bitters and ice; stir until chilled. Pour over fresh ice in an old fashioned glass with the orange slice garnish and a cherry.
Home for the Holidays — Don Q Rum, Puerto Rico
8 oz Don Q Anejo Rum
4 oz Fresh Lemon Juice
5 oz Fresh Orange Juice
2 oz Simple Syrup
2 oz Domaine de Canton Ginger Liqueur
2 oz Drambuie Liqueur
Cuban Punch — Ron Matusalem, Dominican Republic
50 ml. Matusalem Rum
50 ml. Pineapple Juice
50 ml. Orange Juice
Sprite / Seven Up
Grenadine syrup
Pour Matusalem Rum in a tall glass. Add equal parts pineapple and orange juice. Add a splash of Sprite/Seven Up, a few drops of grenadine and mix.
Roba Dolce — Rhum Clement, Martinique
1 oz Creole Shrubb
1 oz Averna Amaro
1 oz chilled espresso
Garnish with an orange zest.
Shake and strain into a dessert wine glass. Squeeze orange oils onto drink.
