Antigua and Barbuda’s recently-opened ICT Cadet Training Facility recently held its first training workshop on the development of mobile apps.

The workshop, which the government said was oversubscribed, is part of an initiative spearheaded by the Ministry of Telecommunications, Science and Technology in collaboration with the BrightPath foundation.

“I feel if a group of persons — committed to not just writing the next Angry Birds or the next most popular million dollar-making app — are committed to building an industry and seeing that industry established on local content, meeting local needs and also serving global needs, then we would have laid the foundation for Antigua’s re-emergence on the global software stage,” said Bevil Wooding, founder of Brightpath Foundation.

The workshop also focused on business principles, civics and ethics.

“This facility (ICT cadet training centre) has a primary responsibility to create content, upload it whether it be on Facebook, YouTube and so on,” Telecommunications Minister Dr Edmond Mansoor said. “But we need to become competitive and we want as a government to demonstrate that we are serious about working with individuals who want to delve into this area of mobile app development.”
