Nevis Premier Joseph Parry and US Virgin Islands Governor John de Jongh held talks last week in St Thomas focusing on geothermal energy.

Nevis’ geothermal project, if and when it does come to fruition, could potentially produce more energy than is needed on the island — creating the opportunity for export to other islands.

“Negotiations are underway to have a system of underwater cables between Nevis and the US Virgin Islands via Puerto Rico,” Parry said. “The cost of electricity is high both in Nevis and the USVI due to the cost of rising oil prices, and for this reason, a regular supply of geothermal energy would be excellent for the residents of both nations.”

Parry and de Jongh outlined other ares of potential collaboration, including cultural exchanges and educational opportunities.

The USVI has already signed an agreement for lower tuition costs for Nevisian students.

Parry concluded the visit by inviting the governor to visit Nevis.
