Hurricane Sandy has led to the death of a woman in Haiti, according to Haiti’s Office of Civil Protection.

The woman, reportedly in her 40s, was killed attempting to cross a flooding river in the Ravine du Sud at Camp-Perrin.

Sandy was recently upgraded from a Tropical Storm to a Category One Hurricane.

Haiti has been working to improve its natural disaster prevention and response in the years since the devastating earthquake of 2010.

Haiti found some praise for its work in mitigating damage from Tropical Storm Isaac, although that storm led to the deaths of 24 people in the country.
