Panama President Ricardo Martinelli has appointed Foreign Minister Roberto Henriquez as the country’s new Minister of the Presidency.

Henriquez replaces Demetrio “Jimmy” Papadimitriu, who had occupied the office since July 2009.

Martinelli, in a letter, formally accepted what he said was Papadimitriu’s resignation this week, thanking Papadimitriu for his “services rendered to the nation.”

Deputy Foreign Minister Francisco Alvarez de Soto will serve as Foreign Minister in a temporary basis.

It is not yet clear what led to the resignation.
