Paulwell: Jamaica Must Innovate for Growth and Development

Jamaica can use science and technology as an engine for growth and development, according to Technology Minister Phillip Paulwell.

The Minister said the country would not see its development advance adequately until there is “total pre-occupation” with the incorporation of science and technology in innovations.

“Recently, I had to lament that in many of our large businesses, we are not seeing enough focus on science, research and development,” he said. “That ought to be a pre-requisite for businesses to survive in this day and age.”

One area in which the country could utilize technology is the mining sector, Paulwell said, mentioning one of his ministerial portfolios.

Jamaica, he said, has not capitalized on the fact that 90 percent of its topography is limestone. That can only be achieved, he said, by incorporating science and technology.

“We do take this responsibility very seriously,” he said. “And we are quite focused on those elements in the Ministry that must deliver in science and technology.”

Paulwell was speaking at the beginning of a three-day conference on linkages between science, technology and innovation and economic development.
