Haiti’s President Michel Martelly held talks with judges of Haiti’s Supreme Court (Cour de Cassation) Tuesday on a series of proposals and decisions aimed at strengthening the functioning of the judiciary.

Martelly said he supported the court and reaffirmed his “determination” to partner with the court in restoring a genuine rule of law in the country.

The two sides discussed the separation of powers, the restoration of judicial authority and power, and the revision of salaries for judges.

Also under discussion was the modernization of the Supreme Courts’s library, the reissue of the court’s Bulletin and competitive health insurance for judges.

Haiti has been working to restore the rule of law in the country, particularly with respect to the judiciary, and has shown progress on that front, according to Michel Forst, the UN Independent Expert in Haiti.
