The European Union has approved the development of a Micro-Hydropower system near Guyana’s Chiung River.

The EU Delegation to Guyana has dispatched the project to Guyanese Finance Minister Dr Ashni Singh, who is the authorizing offer for EU-funded programmes in the country.

The $3.18 million project will be funded by both the EU and the Guyanese government; it should be able to provide power to several facilities nearby, including a secondary school, government buildings and a police outpost.

The project, which will begin in 2013, is slated for completion in 2015.
