Jamaica and Cuba have signed agreements to fight drug trafficking in the Caribbean, according to a Ministry Paper giving details of the agreements.

The two states signed an Operational Police and Maritime Agreement, according to Minister of National Security Dwight Nelson.

The agreement will mean a formal, structured relationship between Cuban and Jamaican law enforcement in an effort to fight against organised transnational crime.

“These agreements are intended to, not just streamline the flow, but to increase information and intelligence sharing between Jamaica and Cuba on the movement of criminal commodities and on the groups involved in its movement between the two countries,” the paper said.

The agreements were signed on Sep. 9 during a visit to Cuba by Sen. Nelson.

The two states have been working mutually on anti-trafficking since 2006.
