The Bahamas has signed a contract to begin construction on a new Marsh Harbour Airport Terminal in Abaco.

The project involves several upgrades to the airport’s infrastructure, including 6,100 feet conversion of the original runway into a jetway, installation of new signage, runway lighting and new flight procedures that comply with the International Civil Aviation Organisation, according to Minister of Public Works and Transport Neko Grant.

Architects Incorporated was awarded a contract for design of the new terminal in July 2010.

The new 51,000-square-foot terminal will include 22 counters, a new luggage scanning system, eight retail shops and two restaurants.

Tourism Minister Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace said Abaco sees around 90,000 visitors each year, and Marsh Harbour is the second-busiest airpot in the country after Nassau, and one of the region’s busiest.

According to the minister, Abaco is visited by more people each year than six countries in the Caribbean.

FES Construction is the project’s contractor.
