Expedia’s Top Caribbean Destination

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - April 22, 2016

It may not be a surprise, but one of the Caribbean’s most popular destinations is also the leading Caribbean destination on Expedia.

The travel company said this week that the Dominican Republic had a “banner year” in 2015, with the destination remaining the top-producing market in the Caribbean.

Punta Cana was the top producing market for Expedia last year, followed by Puerto Rico and Aruba.

But Punta Cana wasn’t alone; Santo Domingo saw more than 25 percent growth, while Puerto Plata posted 30 percent growth on the company’s platforms.

And up-and-coming Samana saw a 45 percent increase in the same period.

The US was the top producing market for the Dominican Republic, showing 20 percent growth in demand last year, followed by Canada, with nearly 20 percent year over year growth.

“With a strong hospitality foundation and idyllic beach weather, the Dominican Republic continues to be the most popular Caribbean destination for travelers from major markets like the U.S., Canada and Brazil,” said Demetrius Canton,  Director of Lodging Partner Services for the Caribbean, Expedia group. “Expedia complements the island’s top-notch tourism offering by being a valued partner and advisor to hotel partners and offers Expedia’s technology capabilities and tools to help them increase sales and their bottom line.”

The announcement was made on the heels of this week’s DATE Dominican Annual Tourism Exchange conference in Punta Cana, the Dominican Republic’s largest tourism conference.
