Jamaica Goes German in Response to Volkswagen Super Bowl Ad

By: Caribbean Journal Staff - February 1, 2013

Update: the video has now been made private by Sandals on YouTube.

The preview of Volkswagen’s upcoming Super Bowl ad featuring an American office worker with a Jamaican accent went viral this week, and now Jamaica has responded.

The VW ad found lovers and haters within Jamaica, although it has indisputably brought Jamaica unparalleled international publicity.

Now, a Jamaican response, dubbed “The Germaican,” takes a lighthearted approach, featuring Jamaican natives speaking German and, for example, putting sauerkraut on Jerk chicken.

It was created with support from Sandals Resorts CEO Adam Stewart.

Just like the Volkswagen version, this one is backed up by a cover of “Come on Get Happy” performed by Jamaican reggae superstar Jimmy Cliff.
