Haiti Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe met Thursday with Kenji Kuratomi, Japan’s Ambassador to Haiti, to identify areas of priority for Japanese-Haitian cooperation.

The Prime Minister has asked Japan for further assistance in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, expressing his desire that some grants provided to Haiti by Japan be used for the purchase of fertilizers and other farming tools to support Haiti’s agriculture sector.

He also proposed concluding an agreement on rice supply with Japan aimed at combating Haiti’s high cost of living, particularly for food items.

Haiti currently imports around 350,000 tonnes of rice from abroad each year, according to government data.

Lamothe pledged to report on the meeting to Haiti President Michel Martelly, who is scheduled to visit Japan in December.
